BMI View : The A ssociation of S outheast A sian N ations Economic Community will provide strong tailwinds to the pharmaceutical and healthcare sector in the region. Though full implementation is unlikely to be achieved by 2015, we believe the ongoing integration of the ten countries into a bloc will give rise to three big themes – a high growth pharmaceutical market ,  private sector led healthcare regionalisation and a n in imbalance in the  distribution of labour in the healthcare sector.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Economic Community (AEC) is a bold plan to integrate the region’s 10 countries into a single economy market. Though healthcare has been identified as a key industry by ASEAN leaders, we hold the view that integration will not be possible by 2015 given the current disparities in intellectual property rights and resources. Instead, we see the AEC integration as an incremental process.  We believe that this gradual integration will give rise to three main themes – a highly attractive pharmaceutical market, private-led healthcare integration and an imbalance in skilled healthcare professionals.
