Sept. 21, MANILA – Igorot Lakbayanis, along with other national minorities, will troop to Mendiola and Luneta, to join nationwide protests against the “fascist US-Duterte regime”.

On the 45th anniversary of Ferdinand Marcos’ Martial Law, the protest is also a culmination of the three-week Lakbayan ng Pambansang Minorya 2017, led by national minorities alliance Sandugo.

“With our Igorot dayaw (honor), and lessons of noble defiance from heroes of the Cordillera like Macliing Dulag, we wear our indigenous clothing in the streets of protests to state that never again should a dictatorship be upon the Filipino people,” Windel Bolinget, Chair of the Cordillera Peoples Alliance expressed.

“There is and has never been a so-called Solid North for the Marcoses and their legacy of tyranny and oppression. We stand with our lumad and Moro brothers and sisters in Mindanao with their call to lift Martial Law and we protest any move to declare it at the national level.”

According to Bolinget, Duterte’s policies on security and human rights are already evolving to parallel the iron rule of Ferdinand Marcos. Then and now, different areas across the country, especially communities of national minorities, are placed under attack for big and foreign multinational companies to plunder resources and to quell legitimate dissent.

“The indiscriminate air strikes that hit Malibcong, Abra right after Duterte ordered the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to flatten the hills, the forced evacuation of the Namal communities in Ifugao because of AFP combat operations, the illegal arrests and filing of trumped-up charges under Oplan Kapayapaan ring of the same tune as Martial Law,” Bolinget added. “It was the people’s collective resistance and defiance of tyranny that confronted the Marcos dictatorship before. It will still be the people’s collective resistance and defiance that will confront Duterte’s tyranny now.”

Aside from the protests in Quezon City and Manila, a protest action will also be held in Baguio City. Different people’s organizations, schools, churches registered to join the protest action that will be spearheaded by Tongtongan ti Umili – Baguio chapter of the CPA.#
