Malaysia Making Early Preparations For Asean Summit 2015

KOTA KINABALU, Oct 15 (Bernama) — Malaysia is making early preparations to face the Asean Summit 2015 which it would be chairing.

Asean 2015 Logistics Secretariat secretary Wan Zaidi Wan Abdullah said the preparations included the setting up of a special logistics secretariat to ensure smooth planning and implementation.

“The Asean chairmanship would be handed over at the end of the 25th Asean summit in Myanmar in November this year.

“Among the major meetings to be held are the 26th Asean summit and 27th Asean summit. Others are the ministerial-level meetings such as Foreign, Economy and Defence,” he told reporters after chairing a secretariat meeting here Wednesday.

There are 19 sub committees under the Asean Secretariat.

He said the secretariat was also working closely with the Asean-Malaysia National Secretariat.

The team would be responsible for setting the dates of the summits and deciding on the theme, logo and theme song.

Wan Zaidi said although Malaysia had chaired Asean previously, in 1977 and 2005, the scenario this time was different as there would be two summits within the same year.

“The two summits differ in format and composition. For instance, the 26th summit will involve 10 Asean nations.

“The 27th summit will involve all the Asean nations and seven dialogue partners such as Japan, China, India and United States,” he said.

Meanwhile, Malaysia would study whether some of the meetings could be held outside of the federal capital such as in Langkawi, Kota Bharu and Kota Kinabalu, he said.
